Hospitals and health care providers are adapting to meet expanding demand for electronic exchange of health care data. Locally, HealthBridge , a not-for-profit community group, is facilitating the cost effective and secure electronic exchange of patient information among physicians, hospitals and insurers. Nationally, patient privacy legislation now requires health care providers to take steps to safeguard the protected health information of their patients. These changes have required significant resource commitments by local hospitals.

Fourteen area hospitals have agreed to link to a computerized alert network system that tracks the symptoms of every patient who comes into their emergency rooms, searching for similarities that might signal a bioterrorist attack.

Ohio is now home to a first of its kind
kidney-exchange program that could result in an additional 50 kidney transplants each year. Christ Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and University of Cincinnati Hospitals have supported the Ohio program which is unique in that it is the first to feature a computer program that will identify and rank patients for possible matches.
